Firstgreen solar product review: T20 Single Axis Solar Tracker by SunPower

SunPower has launched a T20 Tracker which is  most powerful, with the greatest power density per tracker. This is a single-axis solar tracker and  offers the ideal combination of performance, scalable installation, and simplicity. Multiple foundation options and a pre-assembled, modular design facilitate rapid deployment. As it follows the sun, the T20 Solar Tracker produces the most energy per kW. You can generate about 25% extra energy using these trackers.

  1. It is very true that SUNPOWER has the best tracker. But for India, trackers really do not give great advantage as compared to other countries in Europe and USA. Certain pilot plants have been set up in india with trackers and the results show that the energy increase is only 6-8% and not 25%. The figure of 25% may be good for Europe and other countries.

SUNPOWER has to install and test a tracker in INDIA and then publish the results in the public domain so that prospective buyers can start thinking about using trackers.

  2. T20 is dual Axis tracker and not launched for India. India has already installed >30MW worth of Single Axis Trackers of Sunpower (T0) and generation is >15% in comparision to fixed tilt. The sucess results are from Rajasthan, Maharastra and South India. The above comment may be related with other make of trackers experience. With this performance Indian EPCs are very much excited to bring T0 in thier most projects with obvius reasons of Generation, simplicity and another important reason is O&M.

  3. SunPower has installed more than 700 MW of trackers globally and about 30MW worth of Single Axis trackers in Rajasthan, Maharashtra and South India in last one year (model T0 not T20, T20 is dual axis tracker and not offered in India).
These are in operation since last 5-6 months and shown very encouraging results. More the 15% Generation is put on record for a 5MW site in Rajasthan in comparison to fixed system.
Beside SunPower there are other installations of Trackers in India and the Engineering EPCs are very much excited with the additional Energy generation and are now planning to implement their most projects using trackers.

Since they track the sun and align the movement of panels, yields 15-25% more energy generation. Tracker is expected to enhance generation periods even in low exposure periods as shown below:

This may not make good financial sense on low efficiency modules which are spread over larger areas and the incremental yield with tracking isn’t worth enough the additional investment. Moreover it is important to understand that all trackers are not the same and therefore selection of trackers by the developers is an important decision which should take in to consideration reliability, economics and design proven ness such that bankability of the project is not adversely affected.

In Indian conditions with long sunny duration, the additional investment 0f 20-40% compared to fixed system on tracking is recovered very fast and additional generation over life time is a big incentive.

On O&M, the real life observation is contrary to popular belief i.e. Tracking systems are proven to be simpler and economical and thus yielded higher generations (Less losses due to shedding, soiling etc.).

Most fixed tilt installations near to deserts has fast accumulation of dust demanding cleaning on very short intervals while cleaning is a tedious process due to availability of good quality of water.
However, tracking system proven to have low deposits because of movements (-45 to +45 Degree) during the day and thus comparatively lower need of cleaning the panels on short intervals.

Further in fixed tilt cutting the growing vegetation/weed etc. near to panels is positing challenges while tracked structures are flat in non sunny hours give sufficient clearance from ground to clear the vegetations.

Though they have auxiliary power requirement of approx 700 – 1500 units / MW / Annum, but they add 15-25% generation and simplicity in operation… may prove better solution to Indian environment having high dust but with more sunny hours, provided full system is designed, sourced and installed with perfection.

While selecting tracker system, ensure to check the track record of the manufacturer, its tracking technology and experience. There are many options but not all are successful solution providers. Check their features, auxiliary power requirement, simplicity and reliability in operation etc. before making a decision
