India Installs 566 MW of Renewable Energy in Q1-2013


Against an annual target of 4325 MW, India could manage a capacity addition of just 566 MW of renewable energy in the first quarter of the current financial year.

Despite being higher than the capacity added during the same period last year, this achievement could be termed as modest. The new capacity of solar, wind and small hydro power (SHP) installed in the country in the first quarter accounts for 13 per cent of the total annual target. Last year, the country had added 495 MW during the same period.

According to data from Union ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE), wind continues to be the dominant renewable energy source in the country with an addition of 512 MW of new capacity taking the total wind installation capacity over 19 GW. Solar, which has gained the momentum in the country over the last couple of years came second with a capacity addition of 73 MW followed by SHP with 54 MW. The country also saw installation of 12 MW of off-grid and captive power generation capacity from different renewable sources during the first quarter.

With an addition of 566 MW, India’s cumulative installed capacity of grid-connected renewable energy reached 28,709 MW as of June 30, 2013. At the same time, the cumulative off-grid/captive generation capacity of renewable energy in the country stood at 895 MW.

The cumulative off-grid/captive power generation capacity from different renewable energy sources stood at 895 mw at the end of the first quarter. Of the 4,325 mw new capacity target fixed for FY14, wind is expected to contribute 2,500 mw, followed by solar (1100 mw), biogas (300 mw), biomass (105 mw), small hydro (300 mw) and waste-to-power (20 mw).
